Can I just add a big + for goosync, I've used various back-up / sync type diaries etc over the years, and the combination of google calendar and goosyc is bar far the best yet!!

Ian: thanks for the link! You're right, hcard and xfn should be enough to get a list of contacts. But it's always the same story, you can get the best format it needs to be bootstrap by a few big actors before it really matters.

Actually GooSync is based on SyncML, which is already a de facto standard for sync'ing address books or calendars. So what GooSync does is to interface to the Google API at one end, and SyncML at the other end so they can support a gazillion devices.

I didn't look at SyncML in detail, so I don't know if it's based on an existing standard or if they defined their DTD from scratch. I also don't know if it applies well to "non sync" scenarios such as pulling the contact list just once for all.

Chris Messina and friends are looking at this at http://portablecontacts.net/ too. That smells a little like FAIL though. Ideally it would just use oauth + hcard + xfn, but they're reinventing the person schema wheel.
